Just here to blog about some of my thoughts.
No posts on tumblr, no pictures. Just words.
Typical expectations of a person.
School - choose a course you are interested in - graduate with a diploma/degree - work in the industry you studied for
But what are the chances of the above chain happening in real life?
I used to work for telesales in Great Eastern and the targeted group is undergrads who have just stepped into the working industry.
I would ask "Are you working in your field of studies?"
Average 1/5 will say yes.
Which is why I'm puzzled
If the thinking of working for what you studied for is so strong, why does the reality not showing the importance of it?
What if, all along, you thought that you are meant to be in the IT industry and when you eventually stepped into the IT market, you realised you have been wrong?
So what now?
I believe a lot of people felt this way in some point of their lives
I used to be.
At a crossroad.
When I started looking for jobs online, there are tons of jobs just looking for "diploma in any discipline"
From my point of view, they just want to know you are educated, have studied but doesn't matter what you studied for.
Because often, you would have started a new job and realise that most of what you've studied for is not applicable
I'm not saying this is what happen to everyone out there.
Of course, there are people who diligently work their way up like the chain mentioned.
Typically a promotion or a rise in pay every two to three years?
I mean that's great.
You get to study what you are passionate about and work for it.
But what I'm saying is, how many people are like that?
Tons of undergrads going for interviews with their certs in hand, along with their resumes
"I have a degree in _____"
"Yes, I know, so does all the people out there queuing"
So what eventually sets you apart from the rest?
Your resume
It's your personality that will take you places, not your education.
Of course some industries require you to obtain a cert specialising in that field of studies.
Industries like engineering and healthcare
Can't just find any Tom, Dick and Harry to fill in these position mah
But don't get me wrong, education is important to a significant extent.
If not for studying, I would not have learnt to read, write, type
I can name you a few jobs that doesn't require you to obtain these certs
Banking and finance is one.
Shocking right?
I'm not saying that all of the positions in the banking and finance industry do not need certs but one can enter the industry without a cert
Banking sales officer, estimated basic 2 to 2.6k, with commission depending on how many customers you can close
And how many diploma holders are looking for 1.6 to 1.8?
They don't even need a diploma
They want to see how you handle customers, how you talk your way out, how much you are willing to learn
Banking and finance is where the big money comes in if you can take the hardship
Another position, financial consultant, no basic but super high commission.
My ex boss has been in the industry for three years, bought a condo last year, has a car, sole breadwinner and is currently holidaying in Paris.
Good money and tons of travelling opportunities.
A lot of hard work is required but totally worth it.
Again, no need diploma
Sales industry
This category is very wide
I call this selling yourself, doesn't matter what product or service you are selling, as long as you can build rapport with the customer, anything is possible.
Some jobs have basic pay, some are purely commission base but nonetheless equally juicy if your personality and mindset is right for this industry
I've seen a lot of my friends and colleagues earning 1.5 to 2k A WEEK
Needless to say, bu yong diploma
There are tons of jobs out there but which one is the right one for you?
This is the question that stumbled me
Not because of the fear of not knowing if I'm making the right choice
but more on the negativity I face
"next time you will regret" is the most common negativity thrown to me
Next time, next time is when?!
Aren't we taught to live in the present?
Why is it that when I'm doing that, people tell me to prepare for "next time"?!
So people think that some bloggers are stupid for choosing to blog instead of a full time job
Why is that so?
"Because next time they will regret, this blog can last how long?"
You know meh? What makes people fail is the ability to "predict" that things will not last, having such negative thoughts in mind
It's not like they are not earning, just doing what others deemed "less glamorous and stable in finance wise"
Ok, back to me.
I've been in the F&B and tourism industry for three years and I thought that I was meant to be in the tourism industry
Very stubborn. I landed myself a job as a travel consultant.
But I hate it.
I was scared. My perfect job turns out to be something I do not enjoy doing.
What now?
One of my close friend recommended me a job, a sales one, door to door, fucking tiring as hell
But it was for a big company
Won't be a fake and tell you I wanted this job so much
I was hesitant. Door to door leh, sales leh
I've never tried this kind of job before
But still, I went for it
And I realised I can do well
This part still shocks me
But the main reason why I could do well, I suppose it was due to the fact that I've enjoyed office and talking to people
This job and my environment prepares me very well for the future
Never be afraid of trying and doing new things
Then I joined the finance and banking industry
Very good money, boss super nice to me
but I don't like the job
I left
Do I regret this?
No, at least I tried entering this industry and I know this is not the kind of job for me
Imagine I gia si, never try out, I won't have known all these and these are things money cannot buy, experiments I would call them
At least try them when you are young, no regrets
Because there are no guarantees in life
Currently, I've just entered the floral industry
I joined with a blank mind
It's like a piece of blank paper, waiting for it to be filled up with my experiences in the floral industry
I wanted to know if I could do well in this job
And I was given a chance
It takes a lot for a company to employ someone who has no experience or knowledge of this industry and requires a lot of training
and I am thankful I am given this job
Top five in Singapore no less
I hope this job will last and bring me places
